Sri Lanka - The Light of Asia:
In this tear drop shaped island in the Indian Ocean, exists the essence of South Asia, pure Therawada Buddism, protected by its people for more than 2300 years. Formerly known as Ceylon, Sri Lanka is 65,610 square kilometers. Sri Lanka has a population of 19.5 million, a tropical climate, lush green forests and a rich history. A length of 445km and breath of 225 km Sri Lanka encompasses beautiful tropical beaches, rain forests, mountains, ancient monuments and thousands of other delights to please all tastes!

Climate & Seasons:
In the Low Lands the Climate is in general tropical with an average temperature of about 27°C in Colombo. In the Higher elevations however, it can be quite cool with temperatures going down to 16°C. Bright and Sunny days are the norm and are common even during the height of the Monsoon – climatically Sri Lanka has no off -season. The south- west monsoon brings rain mainly from May to July to the western, southern and central regions of the island. While the north -east monsoon rains occur in the northern and eastern regions in December and January.

Sri Lanka has a population of 19.5 million, of whom the majority are Singhalese (74%). Other ethnic groups are made up of Sri Lankan Tamils (12.6%), Indian Tamils (5.5%), Moors, Malays, Burghers ( of Portuguese  & Dutch descent)
Although Sri Lanka is a multi religious country, Buddhists constitute the majority with 69.3%. Other religious groups are Hindus 15.5%, Muslims 7.6%, and Christians 7.5%. Sri Lanka’s literacy rate of 88.6% is one of the highest in Asia. 
Language and Religion:

 Sinhala and Tamil are the official languages in Sri Lanka. Sinhala, a language of Indo Aryan origin is the language of the majority. English is widely spoken and understood. Name boards, road signs and sign boards on busses and trains are usually in all three languages. Wherever you travel you will come across a Buddhist Temple or Dagaba, a Hindu Kovil, a Christian Church or a Mosque, each with its own distinctive architecture. 

The Currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee.   

Visa Requirements:

www.eta.gov.lk. The visa will initially be limited to 30 days from the date of arrival and which may extend to six months by contacting the Department of Immigration and Emigration. This process will not be applicable for Singapore and Maldives passport holders as they are granted visa on arrival.
